Then, during the development of After Story the feelings become so much more intensive not just because what has happened is sad, but because it makes you think of the happy moments that are now lost. What I like so much, is how the song itself then can be used in tandem with these associations, making you remember the happy (and sad) moments throughout Clannad when the theme was playing, or when it was somehow involved. Further association is established directly through Nagisa's love for the song (and Dangos!) on several occasions throughout the series. At the same time its variations are played during many key moments involving Nagisa, forming an indirect association. It becomes a very familiar tune to the viewer through repetition, especially when having it as the ED of the first season. The inclusion of Dango Daikazoku is so well done in Clannad. TL DR I just wanted to show my appreciation for the Big Dango Family. I smile just from thinking about it (I also want to cry). It instantly makes me think of Nagisa, and how she and the song are both too cute and innocent for this world. That song is probably my favorite part about the whole anime. I absolutely love themes and leitmotif, but it's never been to the point where I will cry just from hearing it. I've practically never had my emotions so closely connected to a theme before. But of course, as soon as I heard those first few notes on the piano I was sobbing again. Every time that song played, within first few notes I was in tears.Īt the end, I was afraid I wasn't going to cry since I'd already emptied all the water in my body through my eyes. It is a heart wrenching masterpiece that touched my soul.īut I want to specifically recognize the incredible use of leitmotif in the case the Dango Daikazoku song.
